They’ve been on quite a journey to get where they are today, a proud British manufacturer of bespoke, high-quality bike components. It all started in 1995 when BETD founders, Robert Lewis and Elliot Oakes set up a machining shop, Brampton Engineering and Technical Design. Rob was a keen mountain biker as well as a machinist, so when he decided that his Kona full-suspension bike didn’t have enough travel, it seemed only natural for him to machine up some plates that increased the travel. In no time, BETD was making replacement suspension plates for Kona and Specialized frames and then replacement bearing kits for GT and other bikes.

And it didn’t stop there, BETD soon noticed a need for derailleur hangers too, with many riders unable to get hold of replacements, or unhappy with the cheap, cast quality of the ones that came with their bikes. Ever-growing demand led the firm to grow to 15 people at its height, with three full-time machinists. In 2016 Rob retired, and the firm was acquired by the huge UK engineering firm, KMF Group and Rob’s daughter Kate (who can identify your derailleur hanger at 30 yards) has taken charge.

Back in August 2016, BETD acquired iconic British cycling brand Middleburn, a reputable manufacturer and go-to company for single-speed or tandem chainrings and Middleburn Made by BETD was born. As they say, the rest is history. BETD now encompass the BETD, Goldtec and Middleburn brands and continue to make innovative, high-quality, British-engineered bike components.
